Kathmandu Pokhara Chitwan Tour
Kathmandu's UNESCO-listed temples and stupas
Sarangkot sunrise over the Annapurnas
Jeep safari in Chitwan National Park
Canoe ride and Tharu cultural show
This eight-day tour brings together the three places most visitors want to see on a first trip to Nepal: the temples of the Kathmandu Valley, the lakes and mountain views of Pokhara, and the subtropical forests of Chitwan National Park. It is a road-based holiday with no trekking, ideal for families, couples and anyone short on time.
Your journey begins with a guided day among Kathmandu’s great monuments: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath. Then the Prithvi Highway carries you to Pokhara, where you watch sunrise over Dhaulagiri, the Annapurnas and Machhapuchhre from Sarangkot and explore Phewa Lake, Davis Falls, Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave and the World Peace Pagoda.
From the hills you drop down to the lowland Terai and the village of Sauraha on the edge of Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. With a local naturalist you head out on a jeep safari, paddle a dugout canoe on the Rapti River, walk in the jungle and visit the Elephant Breeding Centre. The park is home to the greater one-horned rhinoceros, gharial crocodiles, deer and hundreds of bird species, and, for the lucky, the elusive Bengal tiger. Evenings bring a Tharu cultural dance show.
Hotels, a jungle resort with full board in Chitwan, private transport, guides and park fees are all arranged by our team, so the only thing to plan is your camera settings.

Itinerary
An eight-day loop from Kathmandu to Pokhara and Chitwan National Park and back, travelling by private vehicle.
Kathmandu UNESCO Heritage Sightseeing
Spend the day with your guide at four of the valley’s World Heritage monuments. Start at Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal quarter of pagoda temples, carved windows and the house of the Kumari, the living goddess. Climb to the hilltop stupa of Swayambhunath for views across the city. In the afternoon, visit Pashupatinath on the Bagmati River, Nepal’s holiest Hindu temple, observing the rituals from the eastern bank. End at Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, where monks and pilgrims circle the dome spinning prayer wheels as evening falls.

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara
Leave Kathmandu after breakfast on the Prithvi Highway, around 200 km of winding road that follows the Trisuli and Marsyangdi rivers through terraced hills and busy highway towns. There are stops for tea and lunch, and the drive usually takes most of the day. On arrival in Pokhara, check in near Lakeside and head out for a relaxed walk along Phewa Lake. If the sky is clear, the Annapurna range and the pointed summit of Machhapuchhre rise above the town. If you prefer, a 25-minute flight can replace the drive for an extra fare.

Sarangkot Sunrise and Pokhara Sightseeing
Drive up to Sarangkot before dawn and walk the last short stretch to the viewpoint at about 1,600 m. As the sun rises, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna massif turn pink and then gold. After breakfast back in town, your guide takes you to Davis Falls, where the stream vanishes underground, and the limestone Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave with its Shiva shrine. Row across Phewa Lake to the island temple of Tal Barahi, then drive up to the World Peace Pagoda on the ridge above the lake for a final panorama of Pokhara and the mountains.

Drive from Pokhara to Chitwan
After breakfast, drive south out of the hills towards the Terai lowlands, following the river valleys down to Sauraha on the northern edge of Chitwan National Park. The journey takes about 5 to 6 hours. Your jungle resort welcomes you with lunch and a short briefing from the naturalist who will lead your activities. Late in the afternoon, take a guided walk through a nearby Tharu village to learn about the indigenous people of the Terai, then watch the sun set over the Rapti River. Dinner is at the resort.

Chitwan National Park Jungle Activities
A full day in the park with your naturalist guide. In the morning, glide down the Rapti River in a traditional dugout canoe, watching for gharial and mugger crocodiles and kingfishers along the banks, followed by a short guided jungle walk. After lunch, head deeper into the park on a jeep safari through grassland and sal forest, the best chance to spot the greater one-horned rhinoceros, several species of deer, wild boar and, with great luck, a sloth bear or Bengal tiger. You may also visit the Elephant Breeding Centre. In the evening, enjoy a Tharu cultural show featuring the famous stick dance.

Drive from Chitwan to Kathmandu
Wake early for bird watching around the resort, when the forest is at its liveliest, then have breakfast and begin the drive back to Kathmandu. The route climbs out of the Terai and follows the Trisuli River back to the valley, taking roughly 5 to 7 hours depending on traffic. After checking in, the evening is free for souvenir shopping in Thamel or a farewell Nepali dinner. A short flight from Bharatpur to Kathmandu can be arranged instead of the drive for an extra fare.

Departure from Kathmandu
Your Nepal tour ends today. Enjoy breakfast and, if your flight leaves later in the day, a final wander through the city, a coffee in one of Thamel’s garden cafés or a last round of souvenir shopping for tea, pashmina or handmade paper. Our team transfers you to Tribhuvan International Airport in good time, around three hours before an international flight. If you would like to extend your stay, we can arrange a short trek in the Annapurna foothills, a mountain flight, or a few more days in Pokhara.

FAQs
Answers to the questions travellers ask us most about this trip.
Will I see a tiger in Chitwan?
Tigers live in the park but are shy and rarely seen. Rhinos, deer, crocodiles and many birds are sighted far more often. No wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.
Do you offer elephant rides?
No. We use jeep safaris, canoe rides and guided walks instead. You can visit the Elephant Breeding Centre to learn about the park’s elephants.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
October to April is ideal. Autumn brings clear mountain views, and late winter to spring (February to April) is excellent for wildlife in Chitwan, as the tall grass is cut and animals are easier to spot. May can be very hot in the lowlands, and the monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain.
How long are the drives?
Kathmandu to Pokhara takes about 6 to 8 hours, Pokhara to Chitwan about 5 to 6 hours, and Chitwan to Kathmandu about 5 to 7 hours. Any of these legs can be replaced with a short flight for an extra fare.
How hot does it get in Chitwan?
Chitwan lies in the lowlands and is much warmer than Kathmandu or Pokhara. Winter mornings can be foggy and cool, while temperatures in April and May often pass 35°C.
What should I wear on safari?
Neutral colours such as khaki, green or brown, long sleeves and trousers to protect against insects, a hat and closed shoes for jungle walks.
