Manaslu

A remote restricted-area circuit around the world’s eighth-highest mountain, crossing the Larkya La through Gurung and Tibetan villages.

About the region

Manaslu

A remote region around Manaslu (8,163 m), the world’s eighth-highest mountain, in Gorkha district. It is a restricted area: the Manaslu Circuit crosses the Larkya La, and the side valley of Tsum preserves Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Manaslu region FAQs

Restricted-area permits, group rules and what to expect on the Manaslu Circuit.

Ask our team
01

Which permits do I need for Manaslu?

You need the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and, because the circuit finishes on the Annapurna side, the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). The restricted permit costs USD 100 for the first seven days from September to November, and USD 75 from December to August, with a daily charge after that. We arrange every permit.
02

Can I trek Manaslu alone?

No. Restricted-area rules require at least two foreign trekkers travelling together with a licensed guide through a registered agency. If you are travelling solo, we can often match you with another trekker or advise on the options.
03

How hard is the Larkya La pass?

The Larkya La, at about 5,100 m, is the high point of the circuit. Pass day is long, typically eight to ten hours with a very early start, and may involve snow. With the acclimatisation days built into our itinerary, fit trekkers with some previous hiking experience manage it well.
04

Can I add the Tsum Valley to the Manaslu Circuit?

Yes. The Tsum Valley branches off the lower circuit and adds roughly five to seven days. It needs its own restricted-area permit and rewards you with some of the most traditional Tibetan Buddhist villages and monasteries in Nepal.
05

When is the best time to trek Manaslu?

October to November is the most reliable season, with clear skies on the pass. March to May is also good, with warmer days and spring flowers. Snow often closes the Larkya La between December and February, and the monsoon brings landslide risk on the lower road.
06

What are the teahouses like on the Manaslu Circuit?

Teahouses are simpler than in Annapurna or Everest, with basic rooms, shared toilets and limited menus higher up. Lodges are friendly and family-run, and hot showers and charging are available in most villages for a small fee.
