Wildlife, seasons and practicalities for a Chitwan safari.

Ask our team
01

Will I see a tiger in Chitwan?

Tigers live in good numbers in Chitwan, but they are shy and mostly active at dawn and dusk, so sightings are never guaranteed. Rhinos, deer, crocodiles and a huge variety of birds are seen on almost every visit, and a full-day jeep safari gives you the best chance of spotting a tiger.
02

How many days should I spend in Chitwan?

Two nights is the minimum to enjoy a jeep safari, a canoe trip and a Tharu village walk. Three nights lets you add a full-day safari deeper into the park, which is the best option for keen wildlife watchers.
03

How do I get to Chitwan?

Sauraha is a five- to six-hour drive from either Kathmandu or Pokhara, by tourist bus or private car. Flights from Kathmandu to Bharatpur take about 25 minutes, followed by a short drive to your lodge.
04

Is it safe to walk in the jungle?

Guided jungle walks are led by experienced naturalists who brief you thoroughly and stay with the group at all times. Rhinos and sloth bears can be dangerous, so following your guide’s instructions is essential. Jeep safaris are a good choice if you prefer more distance.
05

When is the best time to visit Chitwan?

October to March is pleasant and dry, with cool mornings in December and January. February to April is excellent for wildlife, as the tall grasses are cut and animals gather near water, though temperatures rise steeply in April and May. Heavy monsoon rain from June to September limits activities.
06

Do you offer elephant rides?

No. We do not include elephant-back safaris for animal welfare reasons. Jeep safaris, canoe trips and guided walks give excellent wildlife viewing without them.
