Mustang region FAQs

Permits, access and seasons for Upper and Lower Mustang.

Ask our team
01

How much is the Upper Mustang permit?

Since November 2025 the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit costs USD 50 per person per day spent in the restricted area (it was previously a flat USD 500 for the first 10 days). You also need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Permits are issued only through a registered agency, and we arrange them for you.
02

What is the difference between Upper and Lower Mustang?

Lower Mustang covers Jomsom, Marpha, Kagbeni and Muktinath and needs only the standard ACAP permit. Upper Mustang begins north of Kagbeni, is a restricted area leading to Lo Manthang, and has a distinctly Tibetan culture and landscape.
03

Can I trek in Mustang during the monsoon?

Yes. Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and receives very little rain, so June to August is a good time to visit. Flights to Jomsom can still be disrupted by weather in Pokhara, so we build in some flexibility.
04

When is the Tiji festival?

Tiji is a three-day festival held in Lo Manthang in spring, usually in May. The dates follow the Tibetan lunar calendar and change every year, so contact us early if you would like to plan your trek around it.
05

How do I get to Mustang?

From Pokhara, a scenic flight of about 20 minutes reaches Jomsom (2,720 m), or you can drive in around eight to ten hours. From Jomsom, treks continue on foot through Kagbeni, and jeep tours follow the road north to Lo Manthang.
06

Is altitude a concern in Mustang?

Upper Mustang trails mostly stay between about 3,000 m and 4,000 m, with Lo Manthang at around 3,800 m. That is high enough to need a gradual ascent, and our itineraries allow for it. The air is very dry, so drink plenty of water and bring sun protection.
