Best Time To Trek Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang is situated in the Himalayan rain shadow, making it an excellent choice for monsoon treks and accessible throughout the year. However, during winter, the majority of locals relocate from the capital to Pokhara to avoid the cold and snowfall. Usually, the optimal period to explore Upper Mustang spans from March to early November.

Tour Plan

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), a representative from Elevate Trek will extend a warm welcome to you in Nepal. We are delighted to have you as part of this incredible journey where you can experience a lifetime of memories. Subsequently, you will be escorted to your hotel. Later in the evening, our guide will meet you over a delicious dinner to chat about the Upper Mustang trek's specifics.

In the early morning,we will depart from Kathmandu to Pokhara which will take approximately 6 to 7 hours. Along the way, you will  be treated to mountain views, traditional villages, terraced fields, and the lively Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers. Once we reach our destination, you will have the chance to delve into Pokhara, a charming lakeside city. Our night's accommodation will be arranged at a local hotel in Pokhara

On the following day, our journey will take an early flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, the headquarter of Mustang. During the journey, you will be treated to glimpses of the towering Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, both standing tall at over 8,000 meters. Upon arriving in Jomsom,we will start our trek to Kagbeni which is  the entry point to Upper Mustang. As you get closer to Kagbeni in Upper Mustang, distinct characteristics of the area become evident. These include narrow pathways and tunnels with clear features, intricate irrigation canals, vibrant fields of green wheat and barley, and a prominently large monastery painted in deep crimson hues.Overnight in Kagbeni

After having breakfast, we will set off our way to Chele. The path leads us alongside the Kali Gandaki River and it can be quite windy and dusty. About four hours of trekking, we will reach Tange village. The impressive mani wall,fantastic chortens and caves are some of the attractions of this village. After having lunch and exploring this village a bit, we will continue our journey to Chuksang Village. Following the ridge, we will finally reach our destination - Chele. Overnight in Chele.

Hiking beyond Chele gets more challenging due to the frequent ups and downs. As we head to a deep canyon, the path gets narrower and we will reach Ghyakar village crossing it using a hanging bridge. Then,we will head uphill to Taklam La Pass. From there, we will  have a gentle downhill walk for a short distance to Dajori La Pass. After that, the hike becomes easier as we head to Samar where we will pause for a short tea break.Then,we will climb uphill to Bhena for lunch. After the last ascent to Yamda La Pass, we will descend to a stream. A short walk brings us to Syangbochen, offering glimpses of the impressive Tilicho,Yakawa Kang, and Damodar Danda mountains along the way.We will spend the night in Syangbochen.

Starting the day with breakfast, we will continue our journey towards Gheling village. In this village, tourists can explore monasteries associated with the Sakya lineage of Buddhism. Then, we will ascend the valley and cross the Nya La Pass. During our walk, we can see teahouses, small settlements, chortens, barley fields and also local villages.Then, finally climbing Nyi Pass, the trail gently descends, leading us to Ghami in the Lo Mangthang region, which is a beautiful village.This village boasts a charming setting, enveloped by expansive fields. Rest for the night in Ghami.

Our day starts with breakfast in Ghami.The journey from Ghami to Tsarang spans 10.7 kilometers (6.6 miles) on foot and usually takes around 5 to 6 hours to complete. As we trek from Ghami to Tsarang, we pass along the longest Mani wall in Upper Mustang, Chhortens, and Chinggel La, gradually ascending to Tsarang / Charang village situated (3560 meters) .Once we cross the steel bridge at Ghami Khola, a challenging uphill hike to Choya La (3870 meters) awaits us. The Ghami to Tsarang hike navigates through fairly rugged terrain, providing a perfect vantage point to appreciate the beauty of the trans-Himalayan valley. We will spend the night in Tsarang.

 After a substantial breakfast in Tsarang, our trek starts as we descend towards a canyon and cross a river, paving the way for our ascent towards the Lo La pass (3950m). Following this, you will get the first glimpse of the enchanting village of Lo Manthang, the heart of the Lo region with a breathtaking views of Himalayan peaks such as Nilgiri, Tilicho, Bhrikuti, Annapurna I, and the sacred Damodar Kunda pond. Rest for the night in Lo-Manthang.

Today we will explore Lo-manthang.In the days of Nepal's monarchy, Lo Manthang was recognized as one of the prominent kingdoms. Encircled by protective walls, it is renowned as the "walled city" within Upper Mustang. We can delve into the rich tapestry of ancient Buddhist traditions,old monasteries, diverse cultures, local communities, and breathtaking landscapes.

After our early breakfast, we will walk on a route that takes us through Gyakar village.In this village, we can visit the oldest Tibetan monastery, named Ghar Gompa.The trek from Lo Manthang to Drakmar is energizing,  which takes you through various paths that wind above canyons and rugged hills. As the day ends, we will have accommodation for the night in Drakmar.

 We will have our breakfast and start our trek to reach our destination-Ghiling.The trek spans about 14.3 km via Chhunggar and Tamagaon.The trail involves ups and downs,passing through Jhaite, Chhunggar, and Tamagaon villages. Upon arriving at Ghiling(3570m),we will explore the village, monastery, sky caves, and the picturesque buckwheat field. Overnight in Ghiling 

Starting our trek, we will  first cross the Syangboche La at (3850 m).Once over the pass, the trek takes a different route that leads us to the ancient Chungsi cave located near a gorge. After exploring this historic cave, we will come upon a Samar village. From there,we will  walk through two more passes, the Dajong La (3660 m) and the Taklam La (3624m ) ,before eventually reaching Chhusang via Chele.Overnight in  Chuksang.

We will begin our journey to Jomsom in the early morning, because of the powerful wind that picks up later in the day. On the way , we will notice a large Shiva Temple guiding us  to the beautiful Ranipauwa monastery, a lively and colorful village. After crossing a bridge, we will head towards Dhan La and reach Lupra. The main attractions of this place are the Bonpo Gompa (monastery) and the Thakali village.Following a satisfying lunch, we will continue our trek to Jomsom.

After an adventurous 11-day trek, delving into the ancient village of Upper Mustang, we will make our journey back to Pokhara, carrying with us the memories of this remarkable experience and the challenges we overcame. Upon returning  to Pokhara, you have the opportunity to explore the charms of this beautiful city.

As our journey concludes, we will make our way back to Kathmandu, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
